Coleman was born in Blackpool Lancashire. She was the head girl at Arnold School, Blackpool and was awarded straight A's on her A-levels. When discussing her character on Emmerdale, Coleman said that she regrets not having had a typical university experience. Coleman became a member of the theater group, In Yer Space while at school. They performed at the Edinburgh Festival for the play Crystal Clear. Her performance was rewarded, and the play was praised by the critics. Coleman received the role as Jasmine Thomas while she was auditioning at drama schools. The audition took place in 2005. Coleman was nominated in 2007 for two Awards. Coleman received a nomination for Best Actress from the TV Choice Awards. Steven Moffat, the producer of Doctor Who confirmed in a 21st March 2012 press conference that Coleman will portray Matt Smith's partner after Karen Gillan left.
